Oyakuen Garden, the Aizu Matsudaira Clan Garden
A villa beloved by generations of Aizu feudal lords,
the Oyakuen has been cultivated over 630 years of Aizu history.
The history of the Oyakuen is long, dating back approximately 600 years.
It all began during the Muromachi period when Aizu guardian Ashina Morihisa built a villa here, where a sacred spring welled up.
Later, the Aizu Matsudaira clan's founder, Masayuki Hoshina, developed it as a feudal lord's garden.
The second feudal lord, Masatsune, established a medicinal herb garden to research medicinal herbs that could be used to protect the people of the domain from epidemics and to prevent and treat illnesses.
The successive lords of the Aizu Matsudaira domain established medicinal herb gardens, encouraged the cultivation of ginseng, and engaged in overseas trade.
Aizu culture flourished here in the Oyakuen.

Herb garden and seasonal plants
The second lord of the Aizu domain, Hoshina Masatsune, built the medicinal herb garden to save his people from epidemics.
The third lord, Matsudaira Masayoshi, planted ginseng as a trial plant.
Because cultivation of the plant was widely encouraged among the general public, it came to be called the Oyakuen.
Even today, approximately 400 types of medicinal trees and herbs are carefully passed down and protected.
